Etihad Airways has added Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast to its network, with flights from Abu Dhabi to Red Sea International Airport beginning on 4 October 2026. The route strengthens Abu Dhabi’s role as a regional aviation connector and adds another link between the UAE and Saudi Arabia’s expanding tourism economy.

According to Etihad’s official announcement, the Abu Dhabi–Red Sea service launches with one flight per week and will rise to two weekly flights from 25 October 2026. The route is operated by an Airbus A320 configured with eight Business seats and 150 Economy seats. Etihad said the flight takes a little over three hours and gives travellers across its network one-stop access to the Red Sea through Abu Dhabi.

The Red Sea becomes Etihad’s sixth destination in Saudi Arabia, joining Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Medina and Al Qassim. That positioning is commercially significant because Saudi Arabia is already one of the airline’s largest regional markets across business, family and religious travel. The Red Sea route adds a leisure-led destination to that mix, aligning with the kingdom’s development of high-end tourism projects on its north-western coast.

For Abu Dhabi, the route has two financial and business angles. First, it strengthens the airport hub by feeding traffic from the Gulf, Indian subcontinent and longer-haul Etihad markets into a new Saudi tourism destination. Second, it supports multi-destination travel flows, with Etihad promoting the option for international visitors to combine an Abu Dhabi stopover with a Red Sea holiday. That matters for hotels, attractions, retail and ground transport operators in the UAE capital.

The route also reflects a broader aviation trend in which Gulf carriers are moving early into new tourism markets before demand fully matures. By establishing scheduled service at launch stage, airlines can shape travel patterns, support destination awareness and capture premium travellers. Etihad’s announcement described the Red Sea as a short-haul alternative to island and reef destinations that would typically require a longer flight.

The business case will depend on load factors, connection flows and the pace at which Red Sea hospitality capacity comes online. Starting with a weekly service limits risk while testing demand, and the planned increase to twice weekly from 25 October indicates confidence in near-term uptake. The A320 deployment also matches the early-stage nature of the route by offering a narrow-body capacity profile rather than a wide-body launch.

For UAE-Saudi connectivity, the addition deepens an already important air corridor. It gives Abu Dhabi another link into Saudi Arabia beyond traditional business and pilgrimage gateways, and it ties the UAE national carrier to one of the region’s most closely watched tourism developments. The launch is a transport story, but its impact touches hospitality, retail, destination marketing and cross-border investment confidence.

Why It Matters

The route supports Abu Dhabi hub traffic, UAE-Saudi travel flows and access to one of Saudi Arabia’s flagship tourism developments, with spillover potential for hospitality and retail.
